Creating Magic & Ritual :: Quarters, Elements, Elementals & Watchers

The four cardinal directions have long been regarded as places of available, natural power. The corners of the Great Pyramid in Egypt are oriented to them, long lists of correspondences and associations have been built up around them, and the energy forms that some believe to inhabit these realms have been conceptualized, personified and defined in every possible way. Calling the quarters is an integral component of ritual that aligns sacred space with the four directions and usually takes place immediately after casting the circle.

Picture the outline of a magic circle with an equilateral cross superimposed on it. The arms of the cross are aligned with north, south, east and west respectively. The central point on the cross, where the arms intersect, is the convergence and perfect balance of the energy associated with the four directions. This is why many people choose to place their altar in the center of the circle; it is the place of greatest, melded power. Where the arms touch the circle, imagine a doorway that must be opened through invocation, gesture, call or invitation in order to allow the energy behind the door to flow into the circle. The kind of energy that enters your circle from the doorways depends on what you envision to be there. Typically, these energies are conceived of as elements, elementals, or Watchers but there are thousands of options depending on your personal beliefs, magic/religious system and the style and purpose of ritual. It is essential to understand, on all levels, exactly what/who it is that you are inviting to the circle and what duties they are expected to perform while there.
