Months :: April

What's in a Name?

We are still unsure as to where April got it's name, but it may be taken from the Latin word 'aperire', meaning "to open" since April is the month that spring buds really begin to open and the full force of spring is felt through the northern hemisphere.

Eostre monath or Eastremonath was the Anglo-Saxon name for the month of April. The name of the Christian Festival, Easter, comes from this Anglo-Saxon word.

April's Child

She who from April dates her years
Diamond should wear lest bitter tears
For vain repentance flow; this stone
As emblem of innocence is known

Weather Lore

A cold April
The barn will fill.

If the first three days in April be foggy
Rain in June will make the lanes boggy

When April blows its horn
'Tis good for hay and corn.
