Months :: December

What's in a Name?

December was once the tenth month and final month of the Roman year so its name is derived from the word 'decem', meaning ten.

The Anglo-Saxons called December Winter monath, or Yule monath because of the custom of burning the yule log to celebrate the winter solstice around this time of year. After many Anglo-Saxons converted to Christianity the month became known as Heligh monath, meaning holy month, because the birth of Jesus is celebrated in December.
