Months :: July

What's in a Name?

July is the seventh month of the year according to the Gregorian calendar, but was the fifth month in the early calendar of the ancient Romans and so was called Quintilius, meaning "fifth".A Roman Senate renamed the month to Julius in honour of Julius Caesar, who was born on 12 July.

The Anglo-Saxon names for the month were Heymonath or Maed monath, referring respectively to haymaking and the flowering of meadows.

July's Child

The glowing ruby shall adorn
Those who in warm July days are born.
Then will they be exempt and free
From love’s doubt and anxiety

Weather Lore

In this month is Swithin’s Day,
On which, if that rain, men say,
Full forty days after it will
For more or less some rain distil,
Till Swithin’s Day is past and gone
There may be hops, or there may be none.

If the first of July it be rainy weather,
'Twill rain more or less for four weeks together.
