The Oak King vs The Holly King
The myth of the Oak King and the Holly King exemplifies the concept of polarity. They are twins, polar aspects of the sun god’s dual nature, locked in an eternal struggle for the hand of the Goddess and kingship of the land. Their mythic battle takes place on the solstices. At the winter solstice, the Oak King defeats the Holly King and takes control of the year as light and life grow. His reign will only last until the summer solstice, when he must again do battle with his dark twin. The Holly King takes control over the waning half of the year, governing the harvest and the growing darkness. To see the Holly King as evil and the Oak King as good is to misunderstand the meaning. Both are necessary to make a whole, they are compliments rather than opposites. Nature can not constantly produce and we can not run on high continuously. Periods of preparation, growing, reaping and rest are necessary for both man and nature.
